Orthodox Easter in Ukraine
was celebrated a week later than in most of the Christian world because of the local Church observing the ancient Julian calendar, as opposed
to the more recent Gregorian calendar. The most important custom for families, aside
from attending mass,
is packing one or more
baskets for blessing at the parish church. These baskets, at a minimum, include ham
or sausage, candles, assorted dairy products, decorated eggs, and a towel embroidered with religious imagery,
such as the Cross
or the Resurrection.
And then it´s home for dinner!
