The pre-Lenten festival Carnival was celebrated throughout Brazil last weekend, with the culminating parade held, as always, on Fat Tuesday. While every village holds a party to suit its own tastes, the greatest of them all filled the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Carnival begins with the crowning of King Momo, who receives a giant silver and gold key to the city, and culminates in the Samba Parade, where young and old dance the night away. As many as a half a million tourists flocked to Brazil to witness and take part in the pageantry Photos: AP
