Militarization on the rise

19.12.2014 |

In the Global Militarization Index 2014 (GMI) Ukraine rose to the 13th position. The rating was made and published by the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC). The state has a wellfunctioning military and industrial complex, which, despite some fundamental structural deficiencies and obsolete technology, is one of the most productive industrial sectors, says the report on Ukraine. Russia is currently on the 5th place.

In addition, the TOP 10 most militarized countries are Israel, Singapore, Armenia, Syria, Russia, Cyprus, South Korea, Jordan, Greece and Azerbaijan.

Experts point out that the high level of militarization in these countries is the result of complex procurement of weapons. Premier Arseniy Yatsenyuk earlier stated that up to 5% of the GDP should be channeled to strengthening of national security and defense.
