Jüri Tamm: We are laying a foundation for the first public institute of green diplomacy in Europe

10.05.2016 | kyivweekly.com.ua

Jüri Tamm, the Honorary Consul of Monaco in Estonia and the President of the Electric Marathon, talks about the decade-long history of the Electric Marathon on European roads and a new joint initiative on Energy Security for the Future with Burisma.

This is going to be the fifth Marathon, and for the first time it will be held within a large pan-European environmental initiative on Energy Security for the Future, founded by an international Energy Group Burisma and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Is the format of the Marathon going to change?

In 2011, we brought back to life the historic Tallinn Monte Carlo rally. However, we changed the concept from IC engine cars to electric cars. As before, the idea is to bring together people and technology to enable progress in auto industry. Our goal today is not just about demonstrating future car technologies. It is more about engaging people (auto-enthusiasts, politicians, public figures, etc.) into the global transition process to alternative and renewable energy sources. Ecological and electric transport makes only a part of the Forum on Energy Security for the Future.

Our partner Burisma Group shares our views and values. I think they are doing a wonderful job investing in long-term research and development of clean energy. It contributes to the development of geothermal energy in Europe. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco advocates for individual responsibility in resolving environmental issues. We have come a long way in creating the first and the largest public institute of green diplomacy in continental Europe, which maintains an open dialogue with governments, NGOs, businesses and civil society on the need for transition to new environmental standards and renewable energy sources. The Marathon is an important element of the educational process, which provides average citizens with information about possibilities of new and clean technologies.

In 2016, for the second year in a row, the Marathon takes off in Ukraine, this time in Lviv. Do you think it will become a tradition for the rally to start in Ukraine and finish off in Monaco?

Right at the beginning, we all agreed that it was a great idea to set a starting point in Ukraine. We wanted to show that Ukraine and Europe are inseparable. To make this bond even stronger, we believe it is important to engage Ukrainian companies and civil society in European life. It is also symbolic that the Ukrainian company co-founded an International Forum on energy security to promote alternative energy sources in Europe. The format of the Electric Marathon is unique, and, even though the route changes every year, our mission remains the same. We do care about the state of the planet, where our children and grandchildren are going to live. We support those, who stand by our beliefs. Even though many call Monte Carlo a motor racing paradise, today, largely due to the substantial work done by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, it is becoming the European stronghold of clean energy and environmental initiatives.

What European politicians will be attending the Forum?

On June 2, 2016, we are holding our very first Forum, but today already, we can mention a number of reputable politicians and public figures among our spokespeople, including HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, Joschka Fischer, Hunter Biden (the US Vice Presidents son, an independent director at Burisma and a chairman of the USA World Food Program), Ilkka Kanerva (the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE) and other prominent European political figures and local politicians. Around 150 guests are confirmed to attend. These people actively advocate for the new movement in Europe, and we are happy to have them on board, helping to make our European home better and cleaner.
